Football administrator and youth development advocate Vusi Kabinde has emerged as one of eMalahleni’s committed voices in grassroots football, dedicating years to nurturing young talent and strengthening community sport structures.
Kabinde’s journey in football began on the pitch as a local player before he transitioned into leadership and development roles, where he has continued to make a significant contribution to the growth of the game at grassroots level.
He currently serves as the chairperson of Ezinambeni Development and is also a member of the eMalahleni Local Football Association (LFA) executive committee, where he plays an active role in advancing football development, governance and opportunities for young players in the region.
Kabinde is the founder and driving force behind Happy Boys F.C., a club competing in the Ezinambeni LFA Zonal League with Under-19 and senior teams. Through the club, he focuses strongly on mentoring young players, creating opportunities, and promoting discipline, teamwork, and sporting excellence.
Known for his leadership, commitment, and vision, Kabinde remains passionate about using football as a tool for empowerment and community development. His mission is to identify and nurture young talent, helping players grow both on and off the field while contributing to a stronger future for local football.
Football has been an integral part of his life from an early age, deeply rooted in his upbringing in eMalahleni. After playing local football, he realized that many talented young players never got proper opportunities or guidance. That inspired him to move from just playing the game to helping develop young talent.
One of the biggest challenges he experienced was the lack of support structures, proper coaching, and exposure for young players. Many talented boys also faced social challenges such as drugs, crime, and unemployment. Today, through the development structures and Happy Boys F.C., he says, they are trying to give young players discipline, mentorship, opportunities, and a positive environment to stay focused on their future.
“I am proud of helping build a development structure that focuses on youth empowerment through football. Organizing leagues, supporting local teams, mentoring young players, and creating opportunities for boys to showcase their talent are some of the initiatives I value most. I am also proud of promoting unity and professionalism within local football structures”.
His vision has been shaped by many local football leaders, coaches, and community members who believe in youth development. He is also inspired by seeing former local players succeed after being given opportunities. Their journeys continue to motivate him to work harder for grassroots football development.
Among the leaders who have inspired and supported him are SAFA deputy president Linda Zwane, who continuously encouraged the development of young players, Emalahleni Development president Oupa Mnisi, known for always making himself available to support football initiatives, and Thomas Choma, chairperson of the Ezinambeni Zone Local Football Association, who identified Kabinde’s leadership potential and played a key role in his appointment within the Ezinambeni Development Local Football Association.
Some of the major challenges facing the organization include, a lack of funding, limited access to quality facilities, weak development structures, and insufficient support for young players. The club also continues to battle sponsorship shortages, transport difficulties and financial constraints, while many young players face social pressures and difficult home environments.
“We are working to address these challenges by organizing structured competitions, encouraging community involvement, building relationships with football stakeholders, and creating a safe environment where young players can develop their skills”.
He started Happy Boys F.C. because, he wanted to create a platform where talented young players could grow, stay disciplined, and believe in themselves. What makes the club unique is the strong focus on youth development, discipline, teamwork, and giving players hope beyond football.
“We treat players like family and encourage them to become responsible members of society”.
They had several young boys who came into the club without direction but later became disciplined, confident, and focused on their goals. Some improved academically, while others became role models in the community through football.
“Seeing a young player move away from negative influences and become committed to a positive future is already a success for us”.
We teach players to respect each other, respect leadership, and understand the importance of teamwork. He believes, discipline starts with consistency, communication, and leading by example. At the same time, making football enjoyable by encouraging passion, unity, motivation, and a love for the game, he says.
Football keeps young people active, focused, and connected to positive influences. The organization creates a safe space where boys spend time training, learning discipline, and building dreams for the future instead of being exposed to drugs and crime. Institutions like these are important because they provide mentorship, structure, and hope to young people who may otherwise lose direction in life.
“I want players to learn discipline, respect, hard work, leadership, teamwork, and responsibility. Football is not only about winning matches, it is also about building character and preparing young people for life challenges”.
Football brings people together, creates positive activities for youth, and helps reduce social problems. It also promotes unity, healthy lifestyles, and community pride. Through football development, he hopes they can inspire the next generation and create opportunities for young people to succeed.
Parents and the community play an important role because young players need support both at home and on the field. Encouragement from parents, community attendance at matches, and local support help motivate players and strengthen the development structure.
“I see Happy Boys F.C. growing into one of the strongest development clubs in the region and producing players who can compete at higher levels. I also see local football in Emalahleni becoming more professional, organized, and respected, with more opportunities for young talent to be recognized nationally”.
Kabinde encourages aspiring football leaders to remain patient, committed and passionate in their work, saying integrity and consistency are key to successful development. He emphasised the importance of working closely with communities and prioritising the wellbeing of young people.
“Development work is not easy, but consistency and dedication make a difference. Focus on helping young people, work together with the community, and always remember that leadership is about serving others and creating opportunities for the next generation”.
