As food insecurity continues to affect vulnerable households in eMalahleni, community radio station eMalahleni FM has stepped in to assist struggling families through its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme.
The station recently distributed food parcels to 10 families in Kwa-Guqa Extension, Klarinet and nearby communities following a two-month outreach campaign aimed at identifying households most in need of support.
Through the initiative, eMalahleni FM has committed to adopting four families by providing them with monthly grocery support in an effort to offer longer-term relief.
One of the beneficiaries, Nompumelelo Lehlomela from Marikana in Empumelelweni, said the assistance has brought hope to her family during a difficult period.
“I wrote to eMalahleni FM because we were struggling and didn’t know where to turn. This support has made a real difference in our lives,” she said.
Another recipient, Sbongile Mahlangu from Hlalanikahle, who supports a family of seven alongside her grandmother, described the intervention as meaningful and timely.
“This is the second time the station has helped us. It shows they care about what families in the community are going through,” she said.
The station is now calling on residents, businesses and stakeholders to contribute clothing and non-perishable food items to expand the reach of the programme and assist more families facing hardship.
eMalahleni FM said the initiative is aimed not only at addressing hunger, but also at strengthening community support systems and encouraging residents to work together in tackling poverty.
The project has highlighted the growing need for sustained social assistance in local communities, while also demonstrating how collaborative efforts can help restore dignity and stability to vulnerable households.
