The community is in disbelief after the arrest of 39-year-old Bongani Nkosi, a man once considered a trusted neighbour and “uncle” figure. Nkosi is now facing accusations of being a serial rapist linked to at least 13 children between the ages of 7 and 13. Authorities warn the number of victims could be much higher, possibly reaching 30.
For months, families in Emalahleni, Vosman and Mhluzi (Middelburg) reported cases of young girls disappearing, only for the children to later reveal they had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted. Police allege Nkosi would trick his victims by sending them on small errands, then forcing them into his car.
Investigators believe Nkosi built his reputation as a caring member of the community while secretly grooming his victims with sweets, toys and favours to win their trust and keep them silent.
The investigation gained momentum after a 7-year-old survivor spoke up, enabling the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit to connect several cases and identify Nkosi. He was taken into custody while appearing in court for a separate assault and gender-based violence case.
The matter has since been escalated to the High Court, with trial proceedings scheduled to begin on 18 May 2026. Prosecutors intend to consolidate charges of kidnapping, rape and assault into a single case.
Parents of survivors say the community has been left deeply betrayed. One mother, Sibongile, told The Star that Nkosi had gained her trust with kind gestures. “He seemed so helpful, always bringing sweets and toys. I never suspected anything. But he used that trust to isolate my daughter. By the time I realised, it was too late,” she said.
Experts say Nkosi’s behaviour reflects how predators often operate, presenting themselves as friendly and safe figures while slowly manipulating children and their families. Acting Provincial Commissioner Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi praised investigators, saying: “We are ensuring the suspect is removed from society so victims can sleep peacefully.”
Nkosi remains behind bars as police continue to appeal for additional victims or witnesses to come forward.
