Three men have appeared in the Queenstown Magistrate’s Court in connection with the killing of Xoliseka Lali (43), chief whip of the Emalahleni Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
The accused Bavuyise Mdingi (37), Mvuzo Mafana (41) and Sonwabiso Siko (43) were arrested in Mthatha on Tuesday. They made their first court appearance on Wednesday and were remanded in custody until 6 August, when the case will return to court.
Lali was gunned down on 21 July at his rented apartment in South East Village, Komani, by suspects who fled the scene. His death sent shockwaves through the municipality, where he served as chief whip.
Police confirmed that investigations are still underway. Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, provincial spokesperson, urged the public to allow the legal process to unfold without speculation. “The SAPS confirm that investigations into this matter remain active and appeal to the public to refrain from speculation. The judicial process will be respected, and updates will be provided as appropriate,” Gantana said.
