Families of two young women who lost their lives in a tragic case of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in Vosman received a visit from Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie earlier today.
The visit follows the shocking incident of July 23, where a man allegedly set the women alight. The victims, aged 21 and 23, were rushed to Witbank Hospital with severe burn injuries. Sadly, despite medical intervention, the 23-year-old passed away on August 1, followed by the 21-year-old two days later.
Speaking during his visit, MEC Macie condemned the crime, stressing that perpetrators of GBVF must be rooted out of society. “This tragedy highlights that the fight against GBVF is not for government alone communities must unite to protect women and children,” he said.
He further urged members of the public to be vigilant and proactive, ensuring that no one suffers in silence behind closed doors. “Women and children continue to bear the brunt of abuse. We need individuals who are willing to stand up and change what happens in their neighborhoods,” he added.
Macie also appealed directly to women trapped in abusive relationships, urging them to seek help before it is too late. “We continue to witness women suffering at the hands of their partners, and in the worst cases, losing their lives. We call on women to walk away from abusive relationships and marriages before they pay the ultimate price.”
The MEC emphasized that thorough investigations are vital to secure justice for the victims. “Police must work tirelessly to ensure that solid evidence is gathered so that the suspect faces the full might of the law,” he said.
The accused is currently behind bars and faces two counts of murder. His first court appearance is scheduled for August 7, 2025, at the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court.
