Residents Demand Action on Development, Housing, and Illegal Mining
Frustration over poor service delivery erupted in Ward 14 as local residents, joined by members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), marched to the eMalahleni Local Municipality offices to hand over a memorandum of demands.
The protest, held on February 17, 2025, drew dozens of community members who voiced concerns about lack of development, unfair housing allocations, and the growing threat of illegal mining in their neighborhoods.
EFF representatives, who supported the demonstration, said the protest was not politically motivated but a necessary step to ensure the municipality addresses long-standing grievances.
The memorandum submitted to the municipality outlined several pressing issues:
Fair Housing Allocations: Residents allege that corruption and favoritism influence who receives housing opportunities. They demand transparency in the allocation process.
Community Development: Calls were made for improved infrastructure, including better roads, reliable electricity, and water supply in the area.
Illegal Mining Crackdown: Residents want stronger action to curb illegal mining operations, which they claim are damaging the environment and endangering lives.
The EFF and Ward 14 residents gave the municipality 14 working days to respond to their demands. Failure to do so, they warned, could lead to further mass action and intensified protests.
A spokesperson for the protesting group stated: “We are tired of empty promises. Our community deserves better living conditions, fair opportunities for housing, and a safe environment. This is not just a protest – it is a call for accountability.”
Municipal officials acknowledged receipt of the memorandum and confirmed that the concerns raised would be reviewed. However, no detailed response was provided at the time of writing.
