Residents of Clewer gathered on 21 March 2025 to commemorate Human Rights Day through a community celebration focused on unity, cultural heritage and social awareness.

The event, organised by the Clewer Joint Structure, brought together residents, community leaders and entertainers in a programme aimed at promoting the importance of protecting human rights and strengthening social cohesion.

Traditional Ndebele dance performances, poetry and music formed part of the day’s activities, with organisers using the occasion to celebrate cultural identity while encouraging dialogue around equality, dignity and justice.

Actors Bongani Maseko and Innocent Masuku attended the event as guest speakers, where they encouraged young people and community members to play an active role in building safer and more inclusive communities.

“Human Rights Day reminds us that dignity, freedom and equality must always be protected,” Maseko told attendees. “It is our responsibility to ensure future generations continue to enjoy those rights.”

Children also participated in educational activities aimed at teaching them about human rights through storytelling, creative art and interactive discussions. Organisers said the initiative was intended to help young people understand the importance of respect, fairness and accountability from an early age.

Community leaders used the gathering to address challenges affecting local residents and stressed the need for education, unity and collective action in tackling social issues.

The Clewer Joint Structure said it plans to continue hosting programmes that encourage community engagement and empowerment, with discussions already underway to expand next year’s Human Rights Day commemoration.

Organisers said the annual event serves as more than a celebration, describing it as a platform to encourage ongoing conversations about justice, equality and the protection of human dignity.
