MIFF: Local Filmmakers Take Center Stage

Mbombela, Mpumalanga — The spotlight is set to shine on Mpumalanga’s creative industry as the Mpumalanga International Film Festival (MIFF) rolls out across the province from August 3 to 10, 2025. Now in its latest edition, MIFF continues to grow as a platform that amplifies local stories, regional talent, and African voices while connecting filmmakers to international opportunities.

A Festival Across the Province

Unlike traditional film festivals confined to one city, MIFF embraces a multi-venue approach. Screenings, workshops, and panel discussions will take place in Mbombela, Secunda, Emalahleni, and even the Kruger National Park, bringing cinema to diverse audiences and merging cultural spaces with the power of film.

This year’s programme will feature 56 films, carefully selected from 184 submissions, representing a wide range of genres—from documentaries and dramas to experimental shorts. The selection reflects both the depth of South African creativity and the international interest in showcasing African stories.

Key Highlights

Some of the biggest highlights of MIFF 2025 include:

  • 🎬 “Bakangwane” by director Lehlogonolo “King Shaft” Moropane, a film that blends township narratives with universal themes of resilience.

  • 🌍 The Women in Leadership & Development through Media (WILDM) Programme, which focuses on women-led filmmaking, with a special emphasis on wildlife and eco-storytelling.

  • 🎥 Industry masterclasses on topics such as film financing, distribution, eco-filmmaking, and using digital platforms to reach global audiences.

  • 🦁 A wildlife filmmaking workshop and game drive experience inside Kruger National Park, combining conservation with cinematic storytelling.

Empowering Local Voices

One of MIFF’s key missions is to equip emerging filmmakers with practical knowledge and connections. The festival’s workshops and networking sessions will feature established producers, funders, and distributors who will guide newcomers on how to break into both the local and global film markets.

“The festival is about more than just screening films,” said festival director Wiseman Nkosi. “It’s about empowering voices from Mpumalanga, building skills, and ensuring our stories are told and seen on the world stage.”

Community and Tourism Impact

MIFF also doubles as a tourism driver, attracting visitors to Mpumalanga’s cultural and natural gems. The choice of venues—ranging from modern cinemas to open-air screenings in iconic locations—positions the festival as both a cinematic and cultural adventure. Local businesses, hospitality venues, and transport providers are expected to benefit from the influx of attendees.

Looking Ahead

The Closing Night Awards Ceremony, scheduled for August 10 in Mbombela, will celebrate outstanding achievements in categories such as Best Feature, Best Documentary, and Best Emerging Filmmaker. Winners will gain not only recognition but also access to further international platforms, solidifying MIFF’s role as a launchpad for talent.

With its rich programme, MIFF 2025 promises to be a celebration of creativity, diversity, and the future of African film, cementing Mpumalanga as a rising hub for the arts.
