Emalahleni – Police are currently probing a sudden surge in tire thefts after three separate incidents in the past week left vehicle owners facing massive, unexpected replacement costs. The rapid, silent thefts, primarily targeting high-value vehicles, have raised concerns over organized criminal activity in the area.
The crime spree began on September 12 with a swift, unnoticed robbery. A man driving behind a Toyota Hilux realized something was amiss when he noticed a chain dragging beneath the vehicle. The owner, alerted by the observation, pulled over only to discover his spare wheel hadbeen stolen.
The audacity of the thieves escalated in the following days. A resident in Tasbet Park (Klawer Street) parked his Toyota Hilux at home on the evening of September 13. By the next morning, the vehicle was resting precariously on bricks, with all four tires and the spare wheel gone. Just three days later, on September 16, another victim from Tasbet Park woke up to the same sight: their vehicle stripped of its four tires and rims, sitting on blocks.
SAPS Advice: How to Guard Your Wheels
Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson for the Witbank SAPS, issued a strong warning and provided residents with actionable steps to prevent falling victim to these expensive thefts:
- Security Hardware: Replace one nut or bolt on each wheel with a specialized locking type that requires a unique key. This key must always be kept hidden and never inside the car.
- Technological Deterrents: Enhance vehicle security with a car alarm that includes tire pressure sensors or tilt sensors, designed to trigger if the vehicle is jacked up or if tire pressure drops suddenly.
- Perimeter Protection: Secure your parking area with bright, motion-sensor LED lighting and a visible CCTV system (even affordable Wi-Fi cameras can deter thieves). Ensure you have solid, lockable gates and fencing.
- Parking Strategy: Make it physically difficult for criminals. When parking in a driveway or public area, turn your wheels inward or park the vehicle tightly against a wall or high kerb to restrict access for jacking.
This pattern of brazen theft is actively eroding the foundational sense of security in our neighbourhoods. The financial trauma of replacing stolen wheels pales in comparison to the psychological toll this organized crime is inflicting, making residents feel vulnerable even on their own property. We urge law enforcement to recognize that combating this crime is essential to restoring public confidence and the community’s overall quality of life.
