The Emalahleni Local Municipality marked another milestone in its drive to empower local residents through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), as 30 participants were honoured at a certification ceremony held on Tuesday, 22 October 2025.

The graduates proudly received their National Certificates in Plant Production (NQF Level 2) — a qualification accredited by AgriSETA — after successfully completing their training in plant production. The programme forms part of the government’s broader effort to build sustainable livelihoods and promote agricultural skills development among young people and unemployed citizens.

Officiating the event, Executive Mayor Councillor Vusi Julius Nhlapho applauded the graduates for their dedication and perseverance. He highlighted that the municipality remains steadfast in its mission to combat poverty and stimulate local economic growth through practical, skills-based initiatives.

“This achievement is not only a personal victory for each graduate, but a collective stride toward a more resilient and self-reliant community,” Cllr Nhlapho said, adding that such training opportunities help bridge the gap between unemployment and economic participation.

The atmosphere was one of pride and optimism as graduates reflected on their journeys and the doors that the training has opened for them from small-scale farming ventures to employment prospects in the agricultural sector.

Initiatives like the EPWP certification programme are vital to community empowerment. They equip residents with practical skills, foster self-sufficiency, and encourage active participation in the local economy, ultimately laying the foundation for a more inclusive and sustainable Emalahleni.
