A grassroots initiative born from faith, determination and a passion for community upliftment is steadily gaining momentum in eMalahleni, with organizers hoping to make a lasting impact on vulnerable families through fitness and wellness events.

The initiative, Run For Change, was inspired by Vallencia Phaahla, who first shared the vision with her brother, Travoltor Phaahla. Determined to turn the idea into reality, Travoltor took the lead in establishing the organisation despite limited resources and a lack of financial backing.

According to Travoltor, the journey began as a leap of faith.

“We started with almost nothing and had to trust God throughout the process. It was never easy, but we believed in the vision and the difference we could make in people’s lives,” he said.

After several brainstorming sessions, the team realised the project required strong partnerships and community collaboration to succeed. This led to a partnership with Miss Emergent Mpumalanga, whose founder shared the same passion for community development. The collaboration helped boost public awareness and laid the foundation for the organisation’s first community event.

In an effort to secure sponsorships, the founders of the charity run reached out to numerous companies through emails and direct engagements. While many requests went unanswered, one company, Krugel Heisen, agreed to provide sponsorship for water after a meeting with the organizers.

With limited sponsorship support available, the team initially prepared to fund the initiative themselves. However, further support arrived through Nothando Mlondobozi, who partnered with Run For Change and Miss Emergent Mpumalanga through The OM Foundation.

Travoltor describes the first event as a success despite minor challenges.

“There were setbacks, but we learned from them. There is always room for growth and improvement, and we are committed to making each event better than the last,” he said.

The organization’s mission is centered on bringing communities together while promoting health, fitness and wellness. At the same time, it seeks to provide practical support to underprivileged families and schools.

He says, they have already witnessed positive change in the lives of several beneficiaries over the past month and hopes to extend that impact during its upcoming event on May 30, 2026, and future gatherings.

Organisers plan to host events every two to three months as part of a long-term commitment to supporting disadvantaged communities.

“There are many families struggling daily, worrying about food, clothing and basic necessities. We want to raise awareness and assist wherever possible, including supporting less fortunate schools,” he said.

The upcoming event will be open to people of all ages and fitness levels, including walkers and families. Activities will include games and prize giveaways aimed at encouraging unity, wellness and social connection within the community.

The organisers also encouraged residents who may not be able to attend the event physically to contribute through donations of clothing, blankets, sanitary pads and non-perishable food items.

Community members interested in supporting the initiative can contact any of the the organizers on 071 404 5790, 072 62 8 2042, 067 854 6938 or 067 204 4005.

Travoltor believes, community participation would play a vital role in ensuring the sustainability of the initiative and strengthening social unity.

“Showing up means more than numbers. It represents love, support and togetherness within the community,” he said.
