Entrepreneur Launches Travel Agency for Township Residents

eMalahleni, Mpumalanga – The local hospitality sector is celebrating a welcome boost as guesthouses and lodges in eMalahleni report an increase in bookings, thanks to the influx of visitors attending mining conferences in the region.

Mining has long been the heartbeat of eMalahleni’s economy, and this year’s series of industry-focused conferences has not only drawn mining executives, engineers, and stakeholders, but also shone a light on the town’s accommodation sector. Guesthouse owners say the conferences have been a lifeline after years of fluctuating occupancy rates caused by economic challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have seen a 40% increase in bookings compared to the same period last year,” said Thandi Mthembu, owner of Riverside Guesthouse in Model Park. “Delegates are staying longer and spending more, which benefits not just us, but also local restaurants and transport services.”

Industry experts note that mining conferences often attract hundreds of attendees from across South Africa and abroad. With many preferring boutique guesthouses over big hotels for their personalized service, eMalahleni’s smaller hospitality providers are reaping the benefits.

Beyond accommodation, the ripple effects are being felt in related sectors. Shuttle companies are experiencing higher demand for transfers between conference venues, guesthouses, and OR Tambo International Airport. Local eateries and catering services are also benefitting from the influx of delegates looking for authentic Mpumalanga cuisine.

The eMalahleni Local Municipality has welcomed the trend, saying it is proof that conferences and business tourism can play a key role in boosting the town’s economy. “Our vision is to position eMalahleni as not just a mining hub, but also a business tourism destination,” said municipal spokesperson Sipho Mahlangu. “The growth of guesthouse bookings shows that we are on the right track.”

Some guesthouse owners are now reinvesting their gains to improve facilities. Renovations, Wi-Fi upgrades, and enhanced conference amenities are among the changes being made to attract more business travelers in the future.

With several mining events scheduled for later this year, local guesthouses are optimistic that the trend will continue. “We are ready to host more visitors and showcase eMalahleni’s warmth and hospitality,” said Mthembu.

The mining industry’s conferences may be technical in nature, but their impact is extending far beyond boardrooms and presentations – they are breathing new life into the local hospitality economy.
