Major Infrastructure Development Underway
A large-scale upgrade of the N4 highway near eMalahleni is now in progress, marking a significant step towards improving road infrastructure, boosting local trade, and attracting investment to the Mpumalanga region.
Authorities have confirmed that the project will include road widening, resurfacing, and safety enhancements aimed at reducing travel times and minimizing accident risks along one of South Africa’s busiest trade corridors.
Local businesses stand to benefit greatly from the improved transport route. With faster and more efficient logistics, transport costs are expected to decrease, encouraging more commercial activity and making the region a more attractive hub for investment. “This upgrade is not just about fixing a road; it’s about unlocking economic potential for eMalahleni and surrounding areas,” said a representative from the Department of Transport.
For daily commuters and long-distance travelers, the highway improvements will offer:
Reduced congestion during peak travel hours.
Shorter travel times between major destinations.
Enhanced road safety with modernized features and better visibility.
The project will be completed in phases to ensure traffic disruptions remain minimal. Authorities expect full completion by mid-2026, with some sections opening sooner to relieve pressure on key routes. Once completed, the highway is expected to drive regional trade and tourism, supporting industries such as mining, agriculture, and retail, while creating short-term construction jobs and long-term economic opportunities for residents.
