As a member of this community, I cannot sit back and watch as drugs and addiction continue to destroy the lives of our young people. Every day we hear of another child losing direction, another family torn apart, and another life wasted. This is not just the responsibility of parents or schools, our municipality must take the lead in fighting this crisis with resources, compassion, and real action.
We have so many abandoned buildings and empty spaces in our town. Why should they sit unused while our youth wander the streets with nothing to do? Those buildings could be transformed into safe community centres offering Wi-Fi, art and music programmes, and even coding classes. Give young people a place to create, to learn, and to dream, and you will give them something stronger than any drug, a sense of purpose.
But safe spaces alone are not enough. Too many families cannot afford private counselling or rehabilitation when their children fall into addiction. The municipality must partner with NGOs and healthcare workers to bring free and stigma-free support into every ward. Ward councilors and community leaders should be trained to spot young people who are struggling and guide them to the help they need before it is too late.
Jobs and opportunities are also critical. Without hope for the future, many young people will continue to turn to drugs. The municipality should prioritize youth employment in local projects and contracts. A Youth Entrepreneurship Fund could give our young people the chance to start small businesses, whether in technology, farming, or creative industries. This would not only keep them busy, it would give them a reason to believe in their own future.
Finally, we need open and honest conversations. Too many suffer in silence because of shame. The municipality must run campaigns that speak the language of young people through social media, school visits by reformed addicts, and community events where mental health and addiction are addressed without judgement.
Our youth are the future of Emalahleni. If we do not act with urgency, we will lose an entire generation to addiction and hopelessness. But if we come together as a community, with leadership that is bold and compassionate, we can build a town where young people are given every chance to thrive.
