The Emalahleni Local Municipality has opened applications for its non-financial grant funding programme, calling on SMMEs, cooperatives, NGOs, NPOs, and informal traders to apply. The initiative aims to strengthen local economic growth by equipping small and medium enterprises with essential business tools to promote sustainability and job creation.
Through this programme, qualifying local businesses stand to receive support valued between R10 000 and R80 000, focused specifically on the purchase of equipment and tools of trade rather than direct financial aid. The Municipality hopes the initiative will empower local entrepreneurs and address key socio-economic challenges in the region.
Municipal officials emphasised that the programme forms part of ongoing efforts to support business development and reduce barriers faced by emerging enterprises within Emalahleni.
Eligibility and Requirements
To qualify for the grant, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be South African citizens with valid identity documents.
- Operate a registered South African company that is at least 51% black-owned.
- Hold a valid trader’s permit (for informal traders).
- Be up to date with municipal rates and taxes or have approved payment arrangements.
- Operate from a legally secured business site (lease, title deed, or equivalent).
- Have necessary operational approvals (such as water-use licence, SABS certification, EIA, or certificate of acceptability).
- Demonstrate managerial, financial, and technical capacity to sustain the business.
- Show evidence of a meaningful contribution to the project.
- Submit FICA documents, certified ID copies of directors/members, and three months’ bank statements (excluding informal traders).
Special consideration will be given to women, people with disabilities, and youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
